History of our Building

Phoenicia’s Main Street was constructed in 1853, The Sportsman’s

(formerly Dunphy Tavern) was established in 1938 by Mae Dunphy. It

was the favorite hangout place for Babe Ruth who spent much time up

here fishing.  June 1939 Babe invited many of the locals to join him in

Cooperstown during the first-ever Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The Catskill Mountains, including the Esopus Creek near Phoenicia,

are considered the birthplace of American dry-fly fishing and have

attracted numerous famous anglers over the decades. Other notable

athletes and public figures who have fished in the Catskills besides

Babe Ruth include baseball legend Ted Williams, and former

presidents Jimmy Carter and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Brio’s land was a part of the Dunfey Tavern. It was sold and in 1968

the Phoenicia Laundromat was opened. In 1973 the building was

purchased by Mike Ricciardella and transformed into Brio’s.
